Žirovnica is also known as the cradle of Slovenian culture because renowned men, including France Prešeren, Matija Cop, Anton Janša, Fran Saleški Finžgar and Janez Jalen, were born in the area. The village is located in the north western part of Slovenia, close to the border with Austria and Italy, only 50 km from Ljubljana, 45 km from Tarvisio and 50 km from Villach, as well as only 7 km from Bled, the pearl of the Gorenjska region.   Žirovnica is the perfect starting point for hiking tours to the mountains and trips to various parts of the Gorenjska. Stol, the highest peak in the Karavanke, is rising above the village. Other interesting places, for example Bled, Bohinj, Kranjska Gora and Planica, are also located nearby.
